Padang, transit to the surf haven of the Mentawai Islands

Fishing Boats in Padang, Indonesia

Those of you have been traveling to the Mentawai Islands before must have passed through Padang. From here you either took a speed boat, ferry, or flight over or jumped onto your charter boat for an unforgettable surf holiday on the insanely beautiful Mentawai Islands.

There’s definitely not much for surfers to do in Padang. For them it’s normally an in-and-out, just a transit between mainland and one of the most beautiful island chains and best waves in the world.

Padang is not for sissies. It’s hot and humid climate with hundreds of people, scooters and taxi all around you drives you insane at times, especially if you not used to this. It gets exhausting! But besides this, Padang has 100 of smiling faces walking past you everyday with some of the happiest and friendliest people around.

Perhaps your flights are delayed, or you are on a visa run or you do for any other reason get hold up in Padang, go and  explore the city a bit. Here’s what kept us going when hanging around in Padang:

8 simple things to do and keep you busy in Padang:

01

Book yourself into a nice hotel.

Make sure they have a swimming pool you can hang out at and an air-conditioned hotel room.
We’ve spend quite a few nights at the Mercure Hotel which was an excellent choice.

02

Walk around and explore the streets of Padang. Don’t they look different to home?

It’s hot and humid. But we need get out a bit. The streets are busy with so many interesting things to explore.

03

Get yourself a vitamin bomb of a freshly squeezed juice form any of the street stalls.

There are just too many fresh tropical fruits to choose from!! And they juice them right in front of you!

04

Get your last surf supplies at the Substance Surf shop

Grab your basics surf supplies. Wax, leashes, booties, sun screen and beach towel.

05

Visit the local markets

You can find anything you want at these markets. They get extremely busy so make sure to pack along a lot of patience.

06

Grab a bite at the local fish restaurants, choosing your own fresh selection of sea food

The best part at the fish restaurants is choosing your own selection! Love it!

07

Go inland and see the amazing waterfalls and rice fields

Make sure to take another set of clothes along. In this heat you will defiantly want to cool off and get wet.

08

Keep the best for last! You must go to Sari Raso.

Our ultimate favorite local restaurant in Padang. It’s clean, tidy, affordable and serves delicious meals.
The Beef Rendang is our favorite. We could go there everyday if we could 🙂
