Here’s to our 17 things we recommend you should do and explore when traveling throughout the south western part of Angola:
01 | Leba Mountain Pass
When driving from Lubango to the coast you will drive down the beautiful yet dangerous Leba Mountain Pass. Make sure your car breaks are in good working condition. Go to the viewpoint for amazing scenery before driving down.
02 | Sun downer at Tundavala
When visiting Lubango, you should defiantly consider visiting the Tundavala Gap. With only 18km drive from Lubango you will enter a whole new world. Amazing scenery and landscapes that awaits your here. Best time is just before the sun sets, so make sure to bring your ice cold beer along.
03 | Cristo Rei
Visit the Cristo Rei and view Lubango from the top. You’ll be amazed how big Lubango really is!
04 | Explore the canyon
The Flamingo Lodge is surrounded with beautiful canyons and riverbeds. There is an amazing canyon a few kilometers away from the lodge, which is a definite must to check out. It’s a beautiful nature walk and a photographic excursion.
05 | Welwitschia Mirabilis
Visit one of the oldest desert plant in the world, the Welwitschia Mirabilis. You’ll see hundres of Welwitschia plants when driving along the river bed to Flamingo Lodge. However, the oldest and biggest one is the special one you’d want to see!
06 | Do an overnight trip to Foz do Cunene
Organize a once-in-a-life trip with the Flamingo Lodge to Foz do Cunene. If you love fishing this should be your number one priority! You’ll be driving along the nerve wrecking doodsakker (death acre) and fish alongside the Namibian and Angolan border.
07 | Plan a desert day trip to Tigres Island
This was one experience for the books! We had an amazing adventure getting there and checking out this amazing little island off the Angolan coast with no inhabitants and no live just old colonial buildings.
08 | Flamingo Lodge
Visit the Flamingo Lodge, explore it surroundings and enjoy a local beer at Ray’s Bar.
09 | Go fishing
Fishing along the Angolan coastline is addictive. Here you catch with plastics, in warm and clear water. The most common shore fishes are Shads, Kabeljou, Garricks, now and then a Yellow Belly Rock Cod.
10 | Go diving
You get days of crystal clear and warm water, where the only place you want to be is underwater . The underwater life if filled with energetic marine life. An interesting mixture between Namibian and tropical aquatic life.
11 | Go surfing
There are countless surfable waves along the Angolan coast and most of them uncrowded and firing.
12 | Go for a beach stroll
There are endless beautiful beaches in Angola. Grab your camera and go for a nice long beach stroll.
13 | Explore the coastal villages
If you drive along the beach you will encounter quite a few fishing villages. It’s worth checking them out!
14 | Go for a scenic drive
Jump into the car and drive around. Go explore! There a picture perfect landscapes which change within a few kilometers. Make sure you have 4×4.
15 | Fish market in Namibe’
Fresh fish every day. Visit the fish market in Namibe. This coastal desert town has amazing old Portuguese colonial buildings with a flair of modern Angola.
16 | See the Vanessa Shipwreck
Just outside Tombua lies this old rusted shipwreck. The fishing is good around this area!
17 | Hobby time
Relax. Read a book and bring your hobby along. I had so much fun crocheting us 2 new beanies!
