Krui? Ujung Bocor? This sounds like jungle and coconut plantation! Who has thought that the coastline of Lampung in South Sumatra hosts some really good, consistent and quality waves?!
Never heard about Ujung Bocor? Well… it does involve a bit of logistics and traveling. Most of the surf areas are pretty much unexplored, which is great regarding the crowd factor. However, it’s not easy getting there! Locals were talking about opening an Airport, but until then you’ll have to fly into Bandar Lampung and then it’s another 6-7 hours drive to reach the surf area of Krui. Once you get there, most of the surf spots are only a scooter ride apart and your surfing holidays can begin.
Ujung Bocur (Karang Nyimbor) is about 20 minutes south of Krui and is the main surf attraction. It often gets compared with Uluwatu because of its long consistent reef break with barreling and turn sections depending on swell size, direction and tide. It works on all tides and there’s almost always a wave. For those looking for some fun barrels, wait for lower tides and west swells. The paddle out is easy, no need to hire any boats. On small days you can walk over the reef, wait for a lull and paddle out. On bigger days rather paddle out from the tip of the point where the reef drops off. It’s a fun wave that handles crowds well and is welcoming to all levels of surfing.

Where To Stay
There are a number of losmen’s along the wave to choose from. We stayed at Ombak Indah Losmen, which is directly in front of Ujung Bocor. They have an awesome deck overlooking the wave. Very appropriate for non-surfers to enjoy an ice cold Bintag while checking out the others surf 🙂 Ombak Indah has 12 twin share and triple share rooms with comfortable bedding and en suits bathrooms surrounded by a beautiful garden. They serve descent meals, which are all included in your package. View their rates here. Rent a scooter from them and explore the other surf breaks in this area. PS They have free WiFi!

On lay days you can plan a nature, jungle or river trek, visit the waterfall, go on a day outing to banana island, go fishing and snorkeling, visit the Krui markets, rent a scooter and explore the area or simply relax on a hammock and read a book! Don’t forget to book a massage in between your surf sessions!
